Few children’s characters are as recognizable as a tall, red-and-white striped hat on a mischievous cat. Dr. Seuss published his classic book in 1957, and the Cat is finally getting his own animated feature film. Fans want to know when it arrives, who voices whom, and what the story covers. At Ultimate Fandom, we love digging into the details fans care about, so here is everything you need to know about the movie’s story, release date, and cast.

The Story: What Is The Cat in the Hat Movie About
This is not a page-by-page retelling of the book. The film builds an original adventure around the character. The Cat works for the I.I.I.I., the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, LLC, and takes on his toughest assignment yet. His job is to cheer up Gabby and Sebastian, two siblings struggling with a move to a new town.
The stakes are personal for the Cat. Known for taking things too far, he may be on his last chance to prove himself, or he could lose his magical hat. That gives the film a clear emotional engine. The Cat’s chaos is what he does best, but this time it has to serve a purpose.
The studio promises an “epic adventure with an edge” where mischief, magic and mayhem reign supreme. The mix of heart, humor, and a fantastical world should appeal to kids and to the parents who grew up on the book.
Release Date: When Can You Watch It
The film has had a shifting schedule. It was originally set for February 27, 2026, but Warner Bros. Pictures Animation moved it to November 6, 2026.
Here is where the release stands now:
- North America: Theaters and IMAX on November 6, 2026.
- International: Beginning November 4, 2026.
With the date only weeks away, expect a steady stream of promotion, including new clips, posters, and interviews. A holiday-season release also suits a family comedy, since audiences are looking for something to watch together.
Voice Cast: Who Is in The Cat in the Hat
The voice cast is full of comedic talent.
Bill Hader as the Cat in the Hat. Hader leads the film and is also an executive producer. He played the character in a 2014 Saturday Night Live sketch before landing the animated role. His mix of warmth and unpredictability is a natural fit.
Xochitl Gomez as Gabby. The young star is one of the two siblings the Cat is assigned to help.
Tiago Martinez as Sebastian. Sebastian is Gabby’s younger brother and one of the Cat’s newest clients.
Supporting voices. Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, and Paula Pell star alongside Hader, and the film also features Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang, and Tituss Burgess. That is a lineup that promises plenty of sharp comic timing.
The Creative Team Behind the Film
The film is directed by Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni from their own screenplay, with a screen story by Caroline Williams. Carloni has a strong animation background, and pairing him with Rivinoja, a writer with deep comedy experience, suggests a film that balances visual imagination with jokes.
Daniela Mazzucato and Jared Stern produce, and Lorne Balfe composes the music. Balfe’s involvement is worth noting, as he is known for big, energetic scores. There is also a theme song, so music will play a notable role.
The project is a milestone for the studio too. It is described as Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s first full-length feature film. The studio has a lot riding on getting the Cat right.
Trailers and First Impressions
The marketing has been building for months. The third official trailer arrived on June 9, 2026. A main trailer and key art followed, showing off the Cat’s mischief and the risk of losing his hat.
Early reactions center on the bold, colorful animation and Hader’s performance. The look leans into Seuss’s playful, exaggerated style while giving the Cat a modern, more energetic personality.
