Few films have built this much anticipation before a full trailer has even arrived. At Ultimate Fandom, we have followed every poster, teaser, and rumor, and one question keeps landing in our inbox: when can we finally watch it? The varanasi movie release date is April 7, 2027, confirmed on January 30, 2026, when the makers shared a striking poster of an asteroid slamming into Earth in the shape of the number seven. With about five months left on the calendar, here is everything we know, what remains a mystery, and why the heart of this adventure may be love in its biggest form.
The announcement did not arrive quietly. Days earlier, giant hoardings appeared in the holy city itself carrying only a date, which sent fans into a frenzy.
The film is planned as a global release and is being shot in a premium large format for IMAX screens. Early April also places the film near the Ugadi holiday and the start of the long summer season, which could help domestic collections. Trade circles, however, have voiced doubts about overseas numbers, so the opening weekend will be fascinating to watch.
If you are marking calendars, the varanasi movie release date is also the moment the long wait ends for millions of cinema lovers.
Here is where the project turns emotional. The plot is still tightly guarded, but the known pieces are tantalizing. The story follows Rudhra, a devotee sent on a mysterious mission to find an ancient cosmic artifact, while the sacred city faces the threat of an incoming asteroid. The narrative reportedly travels through several timelines, from ancient eras to the present day.
Rajamouli has said the emotional core focuses on a father and son, and he has described watching the hero dressed as Lord Rama during an early photoshoot as a goosebump moment. A sequence inspired by the Ramayana, filmed over roughly sixty days, adds a layer of mythology to the journey.
We should be honest here: no official synopsis confirms a traditional romance. What the material does suggest is a story built on devotion, family bonds, and sacrifice, with Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran adding weight to the ensemble. For many fans, that is a richer kind of love story than a simple courtship, and it fits the director’s habit of wrapping spectacle around raw feeling.
After RRR carried Telugu cinema onto the world stage, expectations for his next step could not be higher. The varanasi movie ss rajamouli connection began years ago, since the director and the star first discussed working together back in 2010. Real production only became possible once the earlier epic wrapped.
Rajamouli has described this as a globe-trotting adventure rooted in Indian mythology, and the November 2025 reveal at Ramoji Film City proved how seriously he treats promotion. Thousands of fans filled a gigantic venue to watch the title unveiled, and the buzz has barely cooled since. Anyone curious about his earlier work can find plenty of retrospectives on Ultimate Fandom while waiting.
For the superstar, this is a bold career move. The varanasi movie mahesh babu pairing promises a transformation unlike anything he has attempted, with first-look images showing him in a rugged warrior avatar, riding an ox and holding a trishul. Reports also say he appears as Lord Rama in the story, so the role carries a dual weight.
His previous release left some fans wanting more, which makes this comeback even more meaningful. Supporters have already started planning massive theater celebrations, and every new still spreads across social media within minutes. Ultimate Fandom readers have told us that his transformation is the single most discussed detail among viewers.
Large films attract large numbers. The varanasi movie budget has never been officially announced, yet trade reports place it between roughly 1,200 and 1,500 crore rupees, which would make it one of the costliest productions in Indian film history. Heavy visual effects, enormous sets, and international locations explain much of that figure.
Streaming chatter followed. One report claims a major platform offered around 650 crore rupees for digital rights while the makers hoped for closer to 1,000 crore, though nothing is confirmed. Sources close to the project have also denied that costs spiraled out of control. Whatever the truth, the varanasi movie budget keeps fueling debate about whether theaters, distributors, and streaming can recover such an investment.
Not everything has been smooth. Soon after the launch, a dispute arose over who legally holds the rights to the film’s name. The varanasi movie rights dispute drew headlines because the title had already been announced with great fanfare.
Fortunately, the matter was settled: the Telugu version became “Rajamouli’s Varanasi,” while other language versions kept the original name. Once the varanasi movie rights dispute faded, attention returned to the film itself.
Several milestones should arrive over the coming months. A full trailer is the biggest one, and a filmed-for-IMAX preview has already teased the scale. Expect music updates, character posters, and international promotional events featuring the cast, since Priyanka Chopra has described this as her return to Indian cinema after years away. Prakash Raj also features prominently in the main ensemble.
We will keep tracking every announcement, so bookmark Ultimate Fandom for fast, fact-checked updates as the countdown continues.
Whether you come for the spectacle, the mythology, or the emotional journey, the varanasi movie ss rajamouli project looks set to be unforgettable. Until the big day arrives, keep checking back with Ultimate Fandom for every update.
